Malcom Ludvigsen, Saltburn Beach

Oil on canvas, 30 x 24"

Broad, reflected beach. The figures are an integral part of the landscape.

Q&A with the Artist

What is this work about? Is it a depiction of a specific place?

People on the beach and their reflections in the wet sand.  I think they make an interesting abstract and colourful pattern. It was painted on Saltburn beach at low tide.

Where did you create it—on site or in the studio? How long did it take?

Painted, en plein-air, on the beach at Saltburn. It took about two hours.  I had to hurry because the tide was coming in.

Does the finished piece reflect your original vision?

Never does.

Were there any challenges along the way?

Just curious and nosy people.  Also, the cliff lift wasn't working so I had to haul all my stuff up the hill when I was finished painting.

What motivates you to paint and create images like this?

The money.

Thanks Malcolm!
