Footman Moth, Laura Langford

The marks give the jewel like design a soft, organic feel.

Q&A with the Artist

What is this work about? Was it from life or a photo?

This piece is part of a series of moth artworks that also includes a Tiger Moth, a Luna Moth, and a Decorated Beauty Moth and a few others. The series is about capturing the beauty of moths that might otherwise go unnoticed. I am drawn to their quiet elegance and intricate patterns.

Where did you create it — on location or in the studio? How long did it take?

I worked from reference photos for accuracy but aimed to keep the marks and textures expressive rather than overly precise. I created it in my studio where I do most of my pastel work. The process took a few hours spread over two sessions so that I could step back and return with fresh eyes.

Does the finished piece reflect your original vision? Were there any challenges during the process?

The finished piece does reflect my original vision in the sense that I wanted it to feel alive and tactile. The layers of pastel gave me the depth and softness I was aiming for. The biggest challenge was balancing detail with looseness. It is easy to overwork a subject like this, so I had to remind myself to stop before the surface lost its freshness.

What motivates you to create images like this?

I am motivated to create images like this because nature has an endless variety of forms and colors that spark my curiosity. Moths in particular have a quiet, understated beauty that I enjoy translating into art. Creating these works allows me to slow down, observe closely, and share that appreciation with others.

Thanks Laura!
