Bridge View, Paul Charlton

Here's one of mine that I like.  Bridge View, oil, 6 x 8" What's this work about? A view of a river looking downstream from a bridge. Where did you make it? I start this painting this outside on the bridge - en plein air. I finished the painting in my studio. Does the finished work realize what you originally conceived? Were there any problems? I wanted to capture a little of the beauty of the river in summer. I think it works, but I didn't have a strong idea of how it would turn out when I started. In terms of problems, it was distracting painting on site with flies, passing cars and hot temperatures. Why do you paint and make images like this?  It's a good outlet for creative energy I have. I like to create paintings and share them with other people.

Tree of Life, Wendy Charlton

 My wife, Wendy, is a weaver. This tapestry she wove is a favorite of mine. I like the circular tree design set against the colorful, patterned background. Tree of Life, Tapestry, 10 x 12.5" What's this tapestry about? The Tree of Life is a symbol for how things are interrelated in a circular way and that has always intrigued me as an image. Where did you make it? I made it at my home in Fork Union, Virginia using a Mirrix Loom. Does the finished work realize what you originally conceived? Were there any problems? To some extent, yes, and to some extent no. I wanted the background to be more subtle with finer gradations in color, but I didn't have the fine gradations of yarn color that I would have liked. Also, I was trying to make the bottom edge straighter. But generally, I'm happy with the way it turned out and it sounds like my husband likes it, so that's good!
