Footman Moth, Laura Langford

Image
Pastel, 10 x 7.2" The marks give the jewel like design a soft, organic feel. Q&A with the Artist What is this work about? Was it from life or a photo?   This piece is part of a series of moth artworks that also includes a Tiger Moth, a Luna Moth, and a Decorated Beauty Moth and a few others. The series is about capturing the beauty of moths that might otherwise go unnoticed. I am drawn to their quiet elegance and intricate patterns. Where did you create it — on location or in the studio? How long did it take? I worked from reference photos for accuracy but aimed to keep the marks and textures expressive rather than overly precise. I created it in my studio where I do most of my pastel work. The process took a few hours spread over two sessions so that I could step back and return with fresh eyes. Does the finished piece reflect your original vision? Were there any challenges during the process? The finished piece does reflect my original vision in the sense that I wanted...

Malcom Ludvigsen, Saltburn Beach

Image
Oil on canvas, 30 x 24" Broad, reflected beach. The figures are an integral part of the landscape. Q&A with the Artist What is this work about? Is it a depiction of a specific place?  People on the beach and their reflections in the wet sand.  I think they make an interesting abstract and colourful pattern. It was painted on Saltburn beach at low tide. Where did you create it—on site or in the studio? How long did it take?  Painted, en plein-air, on the beach at Saltburn. It took about two hours.  I had to hurry because the tide was coming in. Does the finished piece reflect your original vision?  Never does. Were there any challenges along the way?  Just curious and nosy people.  Also, the cliff lift wasn't working so I had to haul all my stuff up the hill when I was finished painting. What motivates you to paint and create images like this?  The money. Thanks Malcolm! https://www.artfinder.com/artist/malcolm-ludvigsen

Shari Buelt, Tucked In at Montague Harbor

Image
Acrylic on gesso board, 6 x 6" Beautiful, cool colors and reflections Q&A with the Artist What is this work about? Is it a depiction of a specific place?  This is a painting from one of our favorite anchorages in the Canadian Gulf Islands, Montague Harbour, on Galiano Island. Where did you create it—on site or in the studio? How long did it take?  Almost every summer we head out on our sailboat for a month or more. I am always taking loads of photos to bring back with me and paint in my studio. I find myself so distracted while out cruising that trying to do a plein air painting is just an exercise in frustration. I love to do smaller paintings because I am able to create something beautiful to share in just one day. What motivates you to paint and create images like this?  I love trying to capture the beauty that I am surrounded by and share that with other people. If my paintings bring a smile to your face, I’ve accomplished what I set out to do. Thanks Shari! https...

Hester Berry, Combesgate Beach

A rocky stage for a windswept sea and sky Q&A with the Artist What is this work about? Is it a depiction of a specific place?   It's almost always about light, rather than about the landscape/subject itself.  Here, it was about the particular colour of evening light as it fell on the various surfaces. Where did you create it — on location or in the studio? How long did it take? I made it in the studio, it will have taken around 3 hours.  I try to paint quickly to keep things fresh and dynamic, without overworking things. Does the finished piece reflect your original vision? I don't really start with an original vision, other than the objective visual truth, so I just aim for that and see what happens! I'm pleased with it though as it landed on the right colours and pleasing marks without having to labour and refine things for hours.  Sometimes a quick brushmark lands just right and does something visually interesting. I try to let those things happen, and that's ...

Paul Charlton, Bridge View

Image
Here's one of mine that I like.  Bridge View, oil, 6 x 8" What's this work about? A view of a river looking downstream from a bridge. Where did you make it? I start this painting this outside on the bridge - en plein air. I finished the painting in my studio. Does the finished work realize what you originally conceived? Were there any problems? I wanted to capture a little of the beauty of the river in summer. I think it works, but I didn't have a strong idea of how it would turn out when I started. In terms of problems, it was distracting painting on site with flies, passing cars and hot temperatures. Why do you paint and make images like this?  It's a good outlet for creative energy I have. I like to create paintings and share them with other people. http://paulhcharlton.blogspot.com/

Wendy Charlton, Tree of Life

Image
My wife, Wendy, is a weaver. This tapestry she wove is a favorite of mine. I like the circular tree design set against the colorful, patterned background. Tree of Life, Tapestry, 10 x 12.5" What's this tapestry about? The Tree of Life is a symbol for how things are interrelated in a circular way and that has always intrigued me as an image. Where did you make it? I made it at my home in Fork Union, Virginia using a Mirrix Loom. Does the finished work realize what you originally conceived? Were there any problems? To some extent, yes, and to some extent no. I wanted the background to be more subtle with finer gradations in color, but I didn't have the fine gradations of yarn color that I would have liked. Also, I was trying to make the bottom edge straighter. But generally, I'm happy with the way it turned out and it sounds like my husband likes it, so that's good! Why do you weave?  I love the way color interacts and the way you can blend color with yarn in ways th...
